ChatGPT Ads

Plain answer

ChatGPT Ads are paid placements inside ChatGPT, OpenAI's chat assistant. Through OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager — launched in beta in May 2026 — businesses can bid for placement in relevant conversations, with cost-per-click bidding and conversion measurement. It's the first mainstream ad channel born inside an AI assistant.

How ChatGPT Ads actually work

OpenAI opened self-serve advertising on May 5, 2026, when its Ads Manager launched in beta for US businesses.1 The mechanics rhyme with search advertising: your ad surfaces when a conversation is relevant to what you sell, you can bid per click alongside impression-based buying, and measurement runs through a pixel and a conversions API.1 The context is new, though — your ad appears inside an answer someone is having a conversation with, not on a results page.

Why early movers care

Two reasons:

  • Conversations carry search-grade intent. People ask ChatGPT "what should I buy" questions in plain language, often with more context than they'd ever type into Google.
  • Young auctions are thin auctions. Fewer bidders competing for that intent while the channel is in beta.

Interest is already measurable — Americans search "chatgpt ads" about 4,000 times a month.2 Early platforms also change fast, so expect targeting, formats, and eligibility to keep moving under you.

Field note from Tomas

I treat ChatGPT Ads the way I treated early Meta and LinkedIn placements: a new, underutilized channel where buyers are arriving faster than advertisers. That's a real first-mover advantage — but only with the same discipline as search: a clear offer, tracked conversions, and a budget sized to learn. New channel, old rules.

Should your business test it?

Test it the way disciplined buyers test any new channel: a capped budget you can afford to lose, tracking in place before launch so results are real, and the same cost-per-customer math you'd apply to Google. The channel being novel doesn't suspend the arithmetic. What early testing buys you — beyond possibly cheap customers — is learning the channel before your competitors are bidding against you in it.

What this means for your ads

ChatGPT Ads is the first genuinely new intent channel in years, and it's early enough that small budgets can still learn cheaply. Treat it as an experiment line next to your proven channels, judge it on ROAS after a real sample, and re-check the platform's rules monthly — beta terms move. Bytown runs ChatGPT among its supported platforms, which is how we're watching this one from the inside.
