Plain answer
A marketing funnel maps the journey from stranger to customer in stages — awareness at the top, consideration in the middle, purchase at the bottom. Marketers shorten the stages to TOFU, MOFU, and BOFU (top, middle, bottom of funnel). Each stage needs a different message, and a different ad.
How the funnel actually works
It narrows on purpose. Many people have your problem (top), fewer are comparing solutions (middle), fewer still are ready to buy this week (bottom). TOFU marketing earns attention — useful content, broad-reach ads. MOFU builds the case — comparisons, proof, follow-up. BOFU closes — offers, demos, "book now." The funnel isn't a law of physics; it's a reminder that readiness varies, and message should follow readiness.
What do funnel stages mean for ads?
Match the ask to the stage. A search for "best crm for small business" is mid-funnel — comparison content converts; "buy now" pressure bounces. A search for "your-brand pricing" is bottom-funnel — get out of the way and show the price. Cold social audiences are top-funnel by definition, which is why the same ad that works on a retargeting audience dies in front of strangers. Most "ads don't work" stories are stage-mismatch stories.
Field note from TomasLead-gen ads taught me to respect the middle of the funnel. Meta instant forms with the right offer capture leads for a few dollars — but a share of those leads buy later, sometimes much later. If nurture isn't in place, the funnel leaks exactly where you already paid. Cheap leads plus no follow-up is expensive.
Do small businesses need all three stages?
Not equally, and not first. With a limited budget, start at the bottom where intent already exists — high-intent searches, warm audiences — because that's the fastest path from spend to revenue. Add middle and top stages as the bottom saturates: when everyone searching for you already sees you, growth has to come from people who aren't searching yet.
What this means for your ads
Label every campaign with its stage and judge it by stage-appropriate math — BOFU on cost per sale, TOFU on the cheap attention it feeds downstream. And keep one conversion path per stage honest: a funnel is only a funnel if the stages actually pour into each other.
