Performance Max

Plain answer

Performance Max is Google's AI-driven campaign type that runs your ads across all of Google — Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Maps — from a single setup. You supply the assets, budget, and conversion goals; Google's automation decides where, when, and to whom your ads appear.

How Performance Max actually works

You hand Google the ingredients — headlines, images, video if you have it, a budget, and a conversion goal — and the system assembles ads and buys placements across every Google surface at once1. There's no keyword list to manage and far less to see: reporting is aggregated, so you mostly learn that it converted, not the searches or placements that did the converting.

A Search campaign is a glass box; Performance Max is closer to a sealed one — more reach, less steering. It leans hard on your conversion tracking, because "get more conversions" only works when the conversions being counted mean money. Feed it a soft goal like page views and it will find you infinite page views.

What should you watch for?

Two things. First, goal quality — automation amplifies whatever you count, including mistakes. Second, remember the automation optimizes within Google's inventory and incentives; it will happily spend on cheap surfaces that flatter the numbers. Branded searches deserve special attention: conversions from people already searching your name can make any campaign look brilliant. Supervision isn't optional; it's just moved up a level — from managing keywords to auditing outcomes.

Field note from Tomas

My rule for Performance Max: it can be great for expanding reach when you're solving a scaling problem — and it should never be your first campaign. Platform automation optimizes for the platform's revenue first. It needs adult supervision: watch what it spends on, feed it clean conversion data, and keep the exclusions tight.

What this means for your ads

Performance Max is a strong tool once tracking is airtight and there's conversion history to learn from — and a frustrating black box when you're small and still guessing. For most owners the sequence that works is: prove demand with a tightly-controlled Search campaign first, then let Performance Max scale what's already proven.
