Google Ads' biggest 2026 changes: AI Max for Search left beta in April, Display moved into Demand Gen on May 26, and Veo video generation arrived inside Google Ads. Search itself still works. What moved is the setup around it.
- AI Max upgrade: broad-match and auto-asset Search campaigns switched from September 1. Dynamic Search Ads wait until February 2027.
- Display: not going away. It lives inside Demand Gen now, and Google expects the move to finish by 2027.
- YouTube: worth testing for awareness. Most of our customers run it beside Search, and small budgets can do it.
- Where Google announces: mostly Accelerate with Google and the Google Ads blog, not the Help announcements page.
Do one thing this month: read your search terms from September onward.
Published by Bytown: every Google Ads release of 2026 that matters to a small business, dated and quoted from Google, and what is actually working. The short version: Search still works. What changed is everything around it.
Google folded Display into Demand Gen on May 26, put its Veo video model inside Google Ads on March 24, and says advertisers using its Google tag gateway "see an average 14% conversion lift."
Here's the thing. Google no longer announces most of this where you'd look.
The Google Ads announcements page carries only two posts for 2026. One of them, on May 20, sends you to Google's advertiser hub, Accelerate with Google, "to access exclusive session content, dive into all the product announcements".
That hub and the Google Ads blog are where the year's changes actually live. This page collects them in one place.

What's working in 2026
This is what I see across the accounts we run at Bytown.
Search still works
Search is still where people with a need go to find someone who can meet it. AI Max has improved this year, with more control over what it matches and writes.
The catch is the one Google states itself: search term matching, final URL expansion and text customization "require conversion-based Smart Bidding strategies in order to function effectively." (Google Ads Help)
Here's what it means.
On a small account with patchy tracking, keep a close eye on the search terms.
YouTube and Demand Gen now carry the brand
Most of our customers now run YouTube for brand awareness and Demand Gen, which is what Display became this year, for awareness and leads. Together with Search, that covers people before they need you, while they compare, and when they're ready.
Google's own line on YouTube: "With YouTube, you no longer have to choose between building your brand and driving performance." (Accelerate, May 2026)
Here's the part owners don't expect. Brand building has become a real strategy for small businesses, and it can be done affordably.
You don't need a TV budget to be the name people already know when they search. Google reports that advertisers adding the Display network inside Demand Gen "see a 9.5% increase in ROI" on average. (Google)
Performance Max is less of a black box
Performance Max used to be the campaign you trusted blind. In 2026 it gained customer-list exclusions, a budget report, demographic reporting and asset experiments.
The configuration and the visibility both improved. If you avoided it for lack of control, look again.
Better tracking means better bidding
The simplified Google tag matters more than it sounds. Better conversion data goes back to Google, and Google uses it to bid on the right buyers.
Google says advertisers using Google tag gateway "see an average 14% conversion lift" (Google), and that "enhanced conversions realize an average 11% increase in Search conversions compared to standard conversion imports." (Google) Those are Google's averages, but the direction is right: the account that reports real leads gets smarter bidding.
AI creative inside Google Ads got good
Photo generation, remixing and video generation inside Google Ads improved a lot this year. That makes it easy to spin up more creative for YouTube and Demand Gen, which is exactly where more creative pays off. Google says "over half of SMBs globally on Google Ads now use Google AI to create or optimize their creative." (Accelerate)
Even so, I use Bytown's ad creative workflows for my own campaigns. They produce high-quality, relevant creative with no AI slop, because the workflows have been tuned for specific results.
Make no mistake:
Whichever tool you use, you still sign off. Google's updated terms keep your "continued obligation to review, approve, or remove all campaigns and ad assets generated automatically by Google Ads features." (Google Ads Terms update)
Did AI Max upgrade my campaign in September?
Yes, if a Search campaign used campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets. Google's developer blog says the upgrade ran from September 1 to September 30, 2026. Dynamic Search Ads were rescheduled to February 2027.
| You were using | What the upgrade turns on | When |
|---|---|---|
| Automatically created assets (ACA) | "search term matching and text customization enabled by default" | September 2026 |
| Campaign-level broad match setting | "search term matching enabled by default" | September 2026 |
| Dynamic Search Ads (DSA) | Dynamic ad groups become standard Search ad groups with AI Max enabled | February 2027 |
Translation: if you ran broad match or let Google write extra headlines, your campaign can now match searches beyond your keywords, and in the auto-asset case write new ad text too.
How to check it, in four minutes
- In Google Ads, open Campaigns, then the Settings tab.
- Tick the Search campaign and select AI Max. If the toggle is on, the campaign is running AI Max.
- Open the Search terms report for the last 30 days and sort by cost. New, looser matches show up here first.
- Open Change history and filter to September. An automatic upgrade leaves a trail you didn't make.
Google's help page says AI Max settings "can be filtered or added as columns in the campaign list view", which is the fastest way to check several campaigns at once. (Google Ads Help)
Should I turn it off?
Not by reflex. Read the search terms first.
Here's the deal:
If the new matches are relevant and converting at a cost you can live with, leave it on. If you're paying for searches that were never going to buy, add them as negative keywords, or switch search term matching off at the ad group level.
To switch it off entirely, the same AI Max panel has a toggle to "opt out of all AI Max settings". Re-enabling it later "will enable the same features as they were previously set", Google's help page says.
The rest of the year's changes, briefly
Local Services Ads into Performance Max (from August 1). You'll still pay per lead, not per click.
The announcement says to "export any historical performance reports you wish to keep, as historical campaign reporting will not transfer to Google Ads." Do that now. Canadian businesses aren't in the first wave: the announcement lists "remaining business categories and additional countries" throughout 2027.
Data Strength Uplift (September 10). "Recovered" conversions are Google's estimate, not phone calls you can count. Keep a monthly count of real leads next to Google's number.
Six-month appeals limit (July 21). Open Policy manager, sort disapprovals by date, and appeal anything close to six months old that you still want running.
Parked domains (February 10). If your Search campaigns include Search Partners, some of your cheapest clicks came from inventory that no longer exists. Compare February onward against itself.
What I'd do this month
- AI Max: check the toggle and read 30 days of search terms.
- YouTube and Demand Gen: if you only run Search, test a small awareness budget alongside it.
- Tracking: upgrade your existing Google tag and turn on enhanced conversions before adding anything new.
- Creative: make more of it, for YouTube and Demand Gen, and review every AI-generated asset before it runs.
- Local Services Ads: export your lead history before the migration.
Common questions
What's new in Google Ads in 2026?
The biggest releases: AI Max out of beta (April), Google Display moving into Demand Gen (May 26), Veo video generation in Asset Studio (March 24), Google tag gateway and simpler tag upgrades (May), Performance Max exclusions and reporting (March), and the automatic AI Max upgrade of broad-match and auto-asset Search campaigns (September).
Where does Google announce Google Ads updates now?
Mostly on Accelerate with Google (business.google.com/accelerate) and the Google Ads blog. The Google Ads Help announcements page carried only two posts in 2026, one of which points to Accelerate with Google.
Did Google upgrade my Dynamic Search Ads to AI Max?
Not yet. Google extended the Dynamic Search Ads timeline, and that upgrade "will begin in February 2027." Campaigns using campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets were upgraded from September 1, 2026.
Is Google Display going away?
It is moving into Demand Gen. Since May 26, 2026 you can manage your Display network presence through Demand Gen campaigns, and Google expects the migration to complete by 2027.
Should a small business use YouTube ads in 2026?
If you want people to know your name before they need you, yes. Most of our customers now run YouTube for brand awareness alongside Search, and it can be done on a small budget.
